idk if this is a young fan thing or new fandom culture but some of yall think fics are abandoned way too quickly. a few months or a year or two is not unusual to go without a fic update. sometimes fics take longer to write, other times writers have rl events, or maybe there’s multiple fics and one gets more priority. there are tons of reasons for fics not to be updated every week or every month. it also isn’t uncommon for people to come back and update fics after a number of years—ive read updates that took five, or ten years. people’s lives change, but they still want to tell their stories. personally, i never consider a fic abandoned unless the author has said so; though if it’s been a few years i manage my expectations. but a last update being a year ago is… generally not a sign that a writer has abandoned their fic
That! Exactly that!!! Writers have lives and writing is hard! It takes time. Stop assuming fics are abandoned!
Original fic usually goes through this same process before being commercially published. Readers just don’t know that bc they aren’t receiving it in bite-size chunks online. Large periods of stagnant writing are historically just another Monday for most writers.

genuinely none of my fics are abandoned (except maybe one that I started rewriting). Fics in the last three years? IM STILL WORKING ON THEM. ALL OF THEM. GENUINELY.
my life has gone to SHIT in the last two years taking care of my husband. I write but don’t have time to edit and post.
But NOTHING is abandoned. Or “unfinished.” It’s all in progress. It’s just that progress is …very slow.
I realize readers get impatient and move on. Good thing I write for me and the few that stick with me.
To date, the only WIP I have ever actually abandoned was one where Some Asshole commented “ugh it sucks that this is abandoned” simply because I hadn’t updated in a while. I abandoned it specifically because of that comment. No way am I putting in the work for someone who treats my art like that.
I know I don’t normally post stuff like this, but I need to ask you all for your help and attention, if I can.
As a lot of you know, I met my girlfriend, Silv, through the Owl House fandom, and through writing fanfic for it. We’re still long distance, so a lot of our casual date nights have revolved around watching things at the same time, and texting back and forth about what we’re watching
Sputnik and Indi are siblings, and have connected so much to our little magical show we all know and love. Indi (they/them) in particular has found so much joy in Luz and Amity’s stories, and as their journey watching the canon show has drawn to a close, has turned where all of us had: to fanfic. Both Indi and Sputnik have brought so much joy into mine and Silv’s lives, and I truly believe it’s a crime that they haven’t gotten as big of a following as other reactors in our fandom’s space.
Which is why I want to signal boost this. Sputnik Spyglass is a smaller channel, and they need our help, TOH fandom 🖤 Last week, Indi suffered cardiac arrest and has been in the hospital ever since. I won’t repeat all the details here. You can go onto their YouTube page or TikTok to read Sputnik’s posts for yourselves.
Sputnik started a gofundme to help with medical expenses for Indi’s recovery. I know times are hard and not everyone can donate, but for a smaller reaction channel like them, even making noise and spreading the word can help make a huge difference.
We, as a fandom, have managed to get almost every reaction YouTuber on the platform to watch this show with our sheer passion for it, alone. The subgenre of animation reactors is small, and I know we can help reach them to spread the word, too, which could help Sputnik and Indi immensely! All we need to do is create enough noise for them 🖤
I’ve seen firsthand the love and care this fandom has for each other. When I started writing and posting Ashes, a lot of it was based on my own experiences with chronic illness and disability in my life. Personally, and with my loved ones. I don’t talk about that part a lot… But for a lot of this fandom, I’ve never had to 🖤 And Ashes was met with such love, and I’ve gotten to hear so many stories from all if you, and commenters, about similar struggles you’ve been through. Or how you’ve been able to relate to Hunter’s story in this fic. And as someone who wrote that story as an outlet for my chronic illness, hearing what happened to Indi……. has hit twice as hard.
So let’s make something beautiful out of it again. As someone who writes fanfiction for this fandom, I want to try and give back to Indi and Sputnik what they’ve given me and Silv.
Tangled au where 12/13 year old Rapunzel gets mad at Mother Gothel and in a fit of teen rebellion cuts her hair and that kills her, so the now orphan Rapunzel leaves the tower and stumbles into the Snuggly Ducking and is effectively adopted by the thugs. She works there as a barmaid and every year a couple of them take her to the outskirts on the kingdom to see the lanterns.
She isn’t found out to be the lost princess until
A) she goes into the kingdom to bail out one of regulars
Or B) after stealing the crown, Eugene, heads to the pub to keep low only to have a heart attack bc wtf is that the queen???
